Hermes Germany has continued infrastructure expansion by starting construction on a new distribution centre near Bremen, as well as celebrating the topping-out ceremony of a new main transhipment base in the Bavarian city of Ansbach.
Operations in Bremen will start in October 2020, handling more than 50,000 shipments every day. The new high-performance depot will be created as a transhipment point for parcels in the region with more than 100 employees handling items. The exact location is in Weyhe, approximately 15km south of Bremen’s city centre.
The parcel carrier has already opened three logistics centres this year in Hamburg, Leipzig and Greven, near Münster/Osnabrück Airport. The new site planned by the Bremen-based company Peper & Söhne Projekt GmbH, in cooperation with Goldbeck Nord GmbH, is also designed for further increases in consignments.
Moreover, a double-digit million amount will be invested in the new depot, making the distribution centre an integral part of the €300 million infrastructure program that Hermes initiated to expand its nationwide logistics network.
Christian Helbig, Head of Real Estate & Facility Management at Hermes Germany, explained: "The new building in Weyhe is of enormous strategic importance for us. With the new distribution centre, we can supply the city of Bremen and the surrounding area even faster and more efficiently.
“In addition, we are very future-oriented with our sustainable building concept and the planned charging infrastructure for our e-van fleet. "
Due to the direct proximity to the city of Bremen and the direct connection to the highway network via the A1 and the federal highway 6, Weyhe distinguishes itself by important location factors for a logistic node.
Christoph S. Peper, Managing Partner of Peper & Söhne Projekt GmbH, added: "We are pleased to design our first property in Weyhe with Hermes Germany and to develop a modern depot. The conditions could not be better. We are absolutely convinced of the location in order to be able to expand our commitment outside Bremen as well.”
As with all Hermes' new logistics centres, the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) will be honouring the Bremen site. The certificate recognizes the exemplary handling of resources and the environment. In addition to ergonomic and barrier-free workplaces, the integration of electric charging stations places a major focus on electromobility.
From the approximately 5,000 sqm hall, up to 80 tours will be carried out every day at the start of operation. "We plan to carry out a considerable part of our daily tours without emissions at the start of operations with at least ten electric vehicles," Helbig concluded.
Meanwhile, Hermes Fulfilment has celebrated the topping-out ceremony of their new main transhipment base for its Einrichtungs Service in Ansbach, Germany, in the state of Bavaria. The company had announced the start of construction in September 2018.
The new logistics property will be used by both of the Hermes Group companies Hermes Fulfilment and Hermes Einrichtungs Service. It will also be dedicated to the logistical processing of furniture, large electrical appliances, and other bulky goods.
The building complex encompasses two halls with a total area of approximately 76,000 sqm. Hermes Fulfilment will operate a 53,000 sqm warehouse for the online retailer OTTO at the site.
Hermes Einrichtungs Service will operate a logistics hub covering an additional 15,000 sqm to handle goods for its clients. A total of approximately 170 hall doors will be installed for loading and unloading operations. The areas for offices, social rooms, and technical facilities used by both companies span a further 8,000 sqm.
Once complete, the facility will create up to 600 new jobs. Scheduled for completion by early 2020, the state-of-the-art logistics centre is being built on a 186,000 sqm site in the Ansbach-West Industrial Park. Thanks to its convenient location and direct connection to the A6 freeway, it is easily accessible and enhances Ansbach’s position as a logistics hub in the western part of the Nuremberg metropolitan region. All in all, a total of €90 million will be invested in the new facility.
