Hermes Germany has opened a new logistics centre in the Halle/Leipzig metropolitan area, with an investment of €38 million, as part of its ongoing €300 million investment programme to modernise and expand the capacity of its logistics infrastructure.
The high-performance distribution centre between Halle and Leipzig, located in the Kabelsketal district of Grosskugel, a town in Saxony-Anhalt, will handle more than 200,000 consignments per day right from the start of operations in May, with about 200 new jobs to be created on site.
It is the sixth of nine logistics centres which Hamburg-based ECE is constructing for Hermes Germany as part of the long-term investment project. The five other logistics centres in Hamburg, in Bad Rappenau near Heilbronn, in Mainz, in Ketzin near Berlin and in Graben near Augsburg are already operational.
The facility is conveniently located in the immediate proximity of the A9 and A14 motorways and other federal highways, as well as Leipzig/Halle Airport.
Like all new Hermes logistics centres, the Kabelsketal logistics centre has been awarded the gold certification of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). The certificate recognises exemplary handling of resources and the environment. In addition to ergonomic and barrier-free workplaces, including height-adjustable tables, the new Leipzig facility is also surrounded by extensive green areas, which have been developed in cooperation with the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU).
"The opening of our new logistics centre in Kabelsketal – in the immediate proximity of the major cities Halle and Leipzig – is of great importance to us. With this ultra-modern logistics facility, we are optimally positioned for the continuously growing shipment volumes and thus for the future. We are also setting economic and ecological standards with our sustainable building concept, the green spaces implemented jointly with NABU and the charging infrastructure for our electric vehicles fleet that is now being planned," Marco Schlüter, Managing Director Operations at Hermes Germany, said.
With all nine Hermes logistics centres, ECE is responsible for the complete execution of the projects – from the search and purchase of land, planning and turnkey construction to the placement of the objects on the investor market. The logistics facilities are based on a sophisticated prototype developed by ECE in two different sizes, which can be realised quickly and cost-effectively at the respective locations.
"We are delighted that with our decades of experience in the field of logistics properties and thanks to the excellent cooperation with Hermes and all those involved in the project, we have successfully completed the logistics centre in such a short time of around eleven months. Following the locations in Bad Rappenau near Heilbronn, Mainz, Ketzin near Berlin, Graben near Augsburg and Hamburg, we are now handing over the sixth logistics centre in a row that we are building for Hermes Germany," Florian Sauer, Managing Director Development & Leasing for ECE's division Office, Traffic, Industries, said.
