DHL Express Poland has opened a new courier terminal at Gdansk Airport which will serve as a gateway for international shipments and also a service centre.
The terminal also has a direct air connection with DHL Express’s largest European hub in Leipzig, Germany.
“For years we have been constantly developing throughout the country. Aiming to improve our customer service, we care about developing the competence and knowledge of our employees, as well as expanding our network of technologically advanced logistics facilities, the effects of which can also be seen in Gdansk,“ said Tomasz Buras, DHL Express Poland managing director.
“Compared to 2016, in 2017 we recorded an increase in shipment volumes in Poland of nearly 30% and we do not intend to stop at that. The decision to build a new terminal in the Tricity was also important due to the importance of the region – Gdansk handles every tenth DHL Express shipment in Poland.“
The new terminal with an area of 1,800 sqm has been equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, which will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of processes related to sorting and handling international shipments. The terminal will have the capacity to sort up to 3,000 parcels per hour, which will result in up to 800,000 shipments per year.
Security issues are also very important for DHL Express, so there will be X-ray machines in the warehouse, which will scan shipments in order to check their contents without opening them, as well as devices for detecting nanoparticles of explosives.
Until now, DHL Express has operated two smaller facilities in Gdansk. However, the steadily growing number of shipments, both in in Gdansk and the whole country, is one of the main reasons why DHL decided to develop its infrastructure in the region and build a much larger facility connecting the gateway and service centre.
John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express Europe, who opened the facility, pointed out: “Poland is one of the fastest growing countries in terms of growth in the courier industry. Better and better results in cross-border trade and a constantly growing number of international shipments to and from Poland create a demand for new, bigger and more modern facilities.
“Thanks to further investments, such as the international airport terminal in Gdansk, we are constantly improving the efficiency of our parcel handling and offering shorter delivery times to our customers. We are proud to be a part of the rapidly developing logistics industry in Poland.“
At the beginning of this year, DHL Express already opened new terminals in Lodz and Wroclaw to expand its network and increase capacity in Poland. Located near the junctions of the S8 and S72 regional highways with the A1 motorway, the Lodz terminal occupies an area of more than 1220 sqm, and includes a warehouse covering 777 sqm and office space. The 2,150 sqm Wroclaw facility comprises a 1,800 sqm warehouse and 331 sqm in office space. The sorting systems at both facilities ensure efficient sorting with a capacity of 1,500 packages per hour, respectively.
DHL Express also built similar facilities in Katowice, Warsaw, Lublin, Rzeszow and Torun in recent years.
In addition, in cooperation with Lagardere Travel Retail, DHL Express has launched 98 new shipping points across Poland at shopping centres, stations and large office buildings.
Over the last two years, DHL Express has been intensively expanding its partner network of service points which currently consists of 687 points in total. With convenient opening hours, DHL service points allow customers to send shipments weighing up to 10 kg any time of the day.
