DHL Parcel starts construction of third distribution centre in Austria

breaking ground of Enns facility

DHL Parcel has started construction of its third distribution centre in Austria, in the town of Enns in Upper Austria, to expand capacity due to e-commerce growth and rising parcel volumes.

As one of the central hubs in Austria, the location in Enns will play an important role in DHL’s network after its completion. The focus will be on parcel deliveries to the metropolitan area of Linz, the third largest city of Austria and capital of the state of Upper Austria.

The new facility, which is due to start operations on 30 June 2019, will be built on a site covering 48,000 sqm, with an 11,000 sqm logistics terminal and more than 1,000 sqm in office space.

"With the construction of the new distribution centre at the strategically perfectly located Ennshafen location, DHL Parcel Austria is responding to the very dynamic e-commerce market in Austria with strongly increasing parcel volumes. This step strengthens our strong market position in Austria,” DHL Parcel Austria Managing Director Günter Birnstingl commented on the strategic development.

"With a sorting capacity of an additional 8,000 parcels per hour at the Enns location, DHL Parcel is underscoring the expansion of both services and infrastructure in Austria. This will enable us to cope with the increasing e-commerce shipment volumes and help our customers achieve further growth,” he added.

Franz Stefan Karlinger, Mayor of the City of Enns, said: "We very much appreciate that Deutsche Post DHL Group is investing in our location. The commissioning of the new distribution centre will not only further optimise the parcel delivery infrastructure in the region but will also create 150 jobs."

Approximately 50 employees will be working on site while up to 100 delivery staff will take over the parcel distribution from the new hub.

The new distribution centre will be contructed by Meir real estate group. It is one of Austria's leading logistics real estate developers and has already been involved as a project partner and investor in several DHL facilities.

Since the beginning of September 2015, the parcel subsidiary of Deutsche Post DHL Group has been delivering parcels in Austria and has established itself as a second largest carrier in the Austrian B2C/C2C market. In total, the company has been investing a three-digit million sum in the development and expansion of the required infrastructure and parcel network, with new locations to be added gradually. With a network of around 2,200 parcel shops, the company also has the largest network of service points in the country.
