DHL Parcel buys leading regional partner to extend Spanish network

DHL Parcel has expanded its fully-owned network in Spain with the acquisition of a major regional partner in Valencia.

The Deutsche Post DHL subsidiary has bought the shares of local transport companies Transportes Alfonso Zamorano and Martí Serra in the local company, which will be renamed DHL Parcel Valencia. The size of the investment was not disclosed.

Through the strategic investment, DHL Parcel will gain ownership of three branches in Picanya, Gandía and Onteniente which collectively cover some 15,000 sqm. The Picanya warehouse has a mechanized conveyor belt capable of sorting 10,000 packages per hour.

In total, DHL Parcel Valencia has 110 employees and a total of 130 self-employed drivers for its fleet of collection, delivery and long-distance vehicles. The regional company has worked in cooperation with DHL since the 1980s.

Claude Piwko, General Manager of DHL Parcel Iberia, said: "Valencia is an important economic centre of our country and is also the third most populous city and metropolitan area in Spain in terms of population, just behind Madrid and Barcelona. This acquisition is therefore a key and fundamental part of DHL Parcel Iberia's development in the B2C market.”

DHL Parcel Iberia explained that it aims to remain a leading B2B parcel delivery company in Spain and continue expanding its B2C business. Its network now consists of 67 operating centres, as well as more than 3,100 Service Points where customers can drop off or pick up shipments.
