GLS has officially opened its enlarged depot in Rotterdam which has doubled sorting capacity and enabled faster deliveries.
Some 200 guests, including the Mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb, attended the opening ceremony last Saturday. The mayor welcomed the creation of 50 future jobs at the depot, which is the company’s largest site in the Netherlands. At present, some 140 people work at the depot for GLS and sub-contractors.
Milo Kars, General Manager GLS Netherlands, explained the benefits of the location. “The depot lies centrally in a growing economic area and is perfectly connected to the transport network.”
Royal Mail’s European parcels subsidiary invested €5.9 million in the expansion, which was completed last autumn. The handling area was extended to 6,600 sqm and the number of loading and unloading gates for trucks rose from 72 to 137. In addition, GLS put a new, state-of-the-art conveyor system into operation. Freight shipments are now sorted in a separate new building with an area of 1,900 sqm.
