Retail delivery platform MetaPack saw a massive volume surge over the Cyber Weekend with a 26% rise to 11 million parcels that outpaced even its most optimistic predictions.
The UK-based eCommerce delivery technology company had expected to see a rise in delivery volumes of around 20% over the Black Friday and Cyber Weekend period.
But it ended up shipping a total of 11 million parcels on behalf of European based retailers and brands, which was 26% more than the same period last year.
In terms of industry sectors, MetaPack saw the greatest growth of orders processed in sport and leisure with a 34% uplift, clothes and fashion which rose by 32% and toys and games where uplift was 22%.
These figures reflect other industry intelligence which indicates that while high street shopping declined on Black Friday eCommerce sales rose, the company pointed out. British e-commerce association IMRG already said that the amount spent on UK online retail sites on Black Friday alone was up 11.7%.
“We did anticipate healthy growth over the Cyber Weekend,” said Bruce Fair, Chief Revenue Officer at MetaPack, “However, these figures are beyond our expectations and reflect not only the continued huge popularity of Black Friday and the Cyber Weekend, but the success of our retail and carrier partners in engaging customers and meeting their eCommerce expectations.”
MetaPack said it will track delivery volume changes through this year’s peak period with particular emphasis on parcel volumes every Monday from now until Christmas, and will publish a separate Carrier Performance Heat Map to illustrate how the top 10 UK carriers are performing.
The company offers worldwide shipping through 400 carriers and enables more than half a billion packages to be sent annually by many of the leading eCommerce retailers such as ASOS, House of Fraser, John Lewis, Wiggle, Marks & Spencer, Sports Direct, Halfords and Tesco.
