DHL Express Germany has started the construction of a new facility in Hamburg, northern Germany, with an investment of around €46 million.
This is part of a comprehensive infrastructural programme with the company modernising its production sites in Germany including Frankfurt, Freiburg, Hannover, Leipzig, Nuremberg and Stuttgart.
The new facility will be built in the city’s district of Allermöhe on a total area of 30,000 sqm including operational and office space. The building will be located in close proximity to other divisions of Deutsche Post DHL Group.
The new facility will combine operational and sales activities, which were previously separated, under one roof. Wolfgang Albeck, managing director of DHL Express Germany, explained: “We can thus better use the synergies through closer cooperation between the two divisions when serving our regional customers.” Until now, DHL Express Hamburg had two separate locations in Wandsbek and Fühlsbüttel.
"In addition, we are expanding the existing production area by around 40% thus preparing for predicted volume growth for the region in the coming years," he said. Due to the continuous increase in shipping volumes of 3% every year and the lack of expansion options, it was not possible for DHL Express to stay at the existing service station in Hamburg – Wandsbek.
The future operational site with a state-of-the-art sorting system will handle all national and international express shipments. It will have the capacity to sort around 6,000 parcels per hour. The sorting system will feature gates for direct loading and unloading of 90 local utility vehicles at the same time and another 20 gates in the hall.
“Through these changes compared to the old location, we will achieve shorter processing times in shipment handling and thus significantly improve the processes for the benefit of our customers," Albeck added. The site is conveniently located on the A1 motorway which results in time savings for local traffic as trucks coming from the south no longer have to drive through the city.
The new facility offers benefits for the 300 employees at DHL Express Hamburg as the workplaces comply with the current ergonomic standards with offices and social rooms to be equipped in a much more modern and comfortable way than it was the case in the previous locations.
