Austrian Post wins parcel market share despite DHL entry

Austrian Post increased its domestic parcel market leadership last year despite the high-profile arrival of DHL Parcel as a new competitor.

The Austrian postal group said it delivered 80 million of the nearly 157 million parcels in the country’s parcels market in 2015. The total number of parcels increased by 3.7% while Austrian Post grew by 8%, according to a market study by Kreutzer Fischer & Partner Consulting GmbH.

In the B2C market, Austrian Post said that “despite the entry of another competitor” it maintained its 76% market share and remained the “unchallenged market leader”. DPD is the second-largest B2C player in Austria with a 12.5% share, according to the study.

The B2B segment, where Austrian Post has been expanding in recent years, saw slight growth of 1.1% last year, the study found. The postal operator grew by 11.9% in this segment, and increased its market share to 31% last year from 28% in 2014.

“We increased our market share despite a difficult market situation and a new competitor. Our approach of improving service and customer focus is paying off,” said Peter Umundum, board member responsible for parcels and logistics.

Continuing investments in new delivery solutions and services such as Saturday deliveries, 24-hour services and delivery boxes are being strongly used by customers, he said. New services such as grocery deliveries or innovative deliveries directly into car boots or residential delivery boxes which are currently being tested also help to improve customer satisfaction, he added.
