DPD Russia has opened a new sorting centre in Domodedovo in the metropolitan area of Moscow which will handle shipments destined to southern regions of the country to speed up deliveries.
The new 10,000 sqm terminal in which the company invested RUB 80 million (€0.9m) will serve areas such as the Volga region, Urals and Siberia with the aim to reduce parcel processing time and speed up deliveries to end-customers.
It is the second in the Moscow region besides the northern terminal in Mitino which handles shipments to St. Petersburg and cities in central Russia.
Like the terminal in Mitino, the new hub in Domodedovo features a new sorting system from the German-based Beumer Group with the capacity to process up to 3,000 parcels per hour. The sorting line is equipped with Rota-Sorter nodes, which simplifies the handling of hybrid parcels and ensures the accurate measuring of weight and dimensions of the parcels, thus increasing productivity.
DPD Russia is planning to retrofit the southern terminal at Domodedovo and to continue the development of the northern hub in Mitino and other sectors in Moscow until the end of this year. The planned investment in these projects is estimated at around RUB 40 million (nearly €0.5m).
"The opening of a new sorting line is part of our strategy aimed at developing DPD’s infrastructure in Russia. More than 80% of the company's shipments are handled in the Moscow region, and all these volumes need to be sorted. The opening of the southern terminal with modern equipment will reduce the handling time of parcels and speed up deliveries to the recipients," Andrey Mayorov, DPD General Director in Russia, said.
