Austrian Post delivered a new record in parcel volumes last year with 80 million parcels which represents a solid increase of 8% compared to 74 million parcels transported in 2014.
Peter Umundum, Austrian Post board member responsible for the Parcel & Logistics division, said: "This impressive parcels record proves that our customers rely on the services and the quality of Austrian Post. I especially thank all our employees who give their best every day and did a great job in the last weeks of 2015.”
With regard to parcel volumes during the busy Christmas period, Austrian Post starts registering parcel volume increases from October onwards, an Austrian Post spokeswoman told CEP-Research. “The parcel volumes in November and December account for around 20% of the volumes during the entire year. In 2014, we transported around 15 million parcels in these last two months of the year, in 2015, this figure rose to around 16 million.” This means an increase of 6.7% for the Christmas 2015 period.
While Austrian Post normally delivers about 250,000 parcels a day throughout the year, its average daily volumes amounted to around 400,000 parcels in December 2015.
On its busiest day of the year, the postal operator shipped more than half a million parcels (510,000), the spokeswoman said. “This corresponds to an increase of more than 8.5% compared to the busiest day of the previous year,” she added. This is some 40,000 parcels more than during the peak day last year when Austrian Post transported 470,000 parcels.
In addition to growth in the B2B (parcels sent between business customers) segment, the growth in online trade has been the main driver for the parcel volume increases, Austrian Post stressed.
