FedEx upgrades home delivery services in Australia for international e-commerce orders

FedEx Express is set to launch a new home delivery service in Australia this week targeting international e-commerce imports.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported today that Australia will be the first country in the Asia Pacific region to get the company’s new ‘My FedEx Delivery’ service. It will start in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and the nearby Gold Coast on Wednesday (December 16).

Kim Garner, managing director of FedEx Express Australasia, told the newspaper that the service will ensure people get their goods at the first attempt, giving them more flexibility and convenience. The service appears to be targeted at international e-commerce orders.

‘My FedEx Delivery’ is essentially an online delivery management website where recipients can tell FedEx when and where they want their goods delivered. According to product information on the FedEx Express Australia website, home delivery options will include delivery to an alternative address, a customised delivery date, the option of providing instructions for the next home delivery and the ability to sign for a package in advance.

The service recalls the ‘FedEx Delivery Manager’ which was launched in the USA in 2013. This offers consumers more flexibility and control of residential deliveries, including advance notifications of incoming FedEx Ground and Express shipments, tracking and shipment rerouting. FedEx does not yet offer any similar service for residential deliveries in Europe.

Various competitors have already introduced this kind of delivery management service for consumers, including UPS’ MyChoice service which now has some 20 million registered users in the USA and other countries.

In Australia, FedEx Express has some 750 employees and operates a network of eight stations, eight World Service Centers and 56 drop-off locations. It makes deliveries using a fleet of 223 vans and has MD11 flights into Sydney.
