DHL Express Russia has completed the expansion and modernisation of its gateway at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow increasing the gateway processing capacity by more than 150%, with an investment of €10 million.
The customs gateway in Sheremetyevo handles shipments arriving from the DHL Express hub in Leipzig via the daily cargo flight six days a week with payload of the aircraft amounting to about 27 tons. The modernisation included the extension of the overall storage area where freight shipments are handled from 3,200 sqm to more than 7,500 sqm.
As part of the facility upgrade, a new automatic sorting system has been installed, which includes cutting-edge weighing and measuring equipment from Cargoscan. As the result, the gateway’s handling capacity has been increased from 1,650 to 4,400 shipments per hour.
Adrian Marley, Managing Director, DHL Express in Russia, CIS & South East Europe, said: “The decision to expand our customs terminal in Sheremetyevo was motivated by the growing demand for international express delivery services, which we observe every year and expect to continue in the coming years. The renovation will allow us to process much higher shipping volumes due to optimisation of operations and efficient use of resources. Even when the shipment volumes are growing, DHL Express guarantees its customers the highest level of service and shortest delivery times.”
The DHL hub in Sheremetyevo processes a considerable part of the shipping volumes for the Eurasian Economic Union covering Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
The upgraded DHL Express gateway corresponds to the latest security requirements and provides even more comfortable working conditions for the company’s employees. DHL employs 200 staff at the hub including customs declarants, import agents, warehouse workers, supervisors, security guards and duty billing agents.
The expansion of the Sheremetyevo gateway is one of the key projects in the development of DHL Express’ own infrastructure in the country. Recently, the company expanded and renewed its logistics centres, warehouses and offices in eight Russian cities. Last year, it opened its second distribution centre in St. Petersburg covering 3,700 sqm.
