New Zealand Post will move its postal and courier operations at Hamilton, south of Auckland, to a purpose-built integrated delivery and distribution hub to increase capacity for parcels growth.
The postal group has signed an agreement with Civil Place Limited to lease a brand new 8,000 sqm building at Te Rapa Gateway, to be operational in the first half of 2016. The company’s overall commitment to the new hub is in the range of $8 million to $12 million over at least nine years.
New Zealand Post General Manager of Business Performance and Optimisation Stu Kane said the new hub is another step towards fully modernising the Post Group’s operations in Hamilton and the Waikato.
“It’s a multi-million dollar commitment to the region that supports the group’s growth strategy and closer integration between mail and parcel delivery,” he said. “The hub will integrate the group’s postal and courier functions and is another significant investment in our national network to keep pace with growing demand for parcels.”
The hub is specially designed so that New Zealand Post can get parcels to customers faster, and to support and enhance mail and rural delivery in Hamilton and the Waikato, Kane said.
“The new building will support innovations that are currently being trialled including the three and four-wheeled eco vehicles that carry letters and parcels. It will accommodate larger trucks; the trucks will only have to deliver to one place, rather than two as they do now; and they will be loaded and unloaded under cover to keep parcels and mail dry.”
The hub will be a base for around 60 delivery staff, 13 rural delivery contractors and 35 couriers, and will be a significant hub for the distribution network in the wider Waikato region.
The Hamilton mail processing and delivery operations, the Express Couriers Ltd (Courier Post and Pace) branch and other business operations will all relocate to the new site.
