Norway Post sets record with major purchase of electric cars

Norway Post presents new electric vans

Norway Post is making one of the world's largest single purchases of electric cars, with almost 300 new electric vehicles from Renault and Nissan, as part of its extensive programme to reduce CO2 emissions.

Over the course of one year, almost 300 new electric cars will be introduced into the mail distribution fleet throughout the entire country. Most of the vehicles will be supplied by Renault as the primary supplier, with a smaller number from Nissan as the secondary supplier. The contract values were not disclosed.

The company said it has opted to use environmentally friendly vehicles in areas of its operation where they have been proven to be viable, both operationally and financially. Environmental accounts show that the transition to environmentally friendly vehicles has significantly reduced CO2 emissions and saved the group millions of euros.

"This represents a milestone in our environmental work. Norway Post is one of the Nordic region's biggest transport operators and our CO2 emissions are quite large. We are now seeing the rather significant results from the measures we have implemented. The purchase of new electric cars is one of the major contributors to us meeting our environmental targets," said CEO Dag Mejdell.

In total, Norway Post has around 3,700 routes throughout Norway and the new vehicles are smaller distribution cars that will primarily be used in densely populated areas and for mid-length routes.

Over the past five years, Norway Post has introduced more than 900 electric vehicles and trailers into its mail distribution operations. They are used for routes of varying length, topography and number of deliveries per route. This also means that there are different requirements for where each vehicle is best suited.

"We also use environmentally friendly fuel in 200 of our larger cars and we only buy new vehicles that live up to the leading environmental standards. Our investment in environmentally friendly logistics and mail distribution extends beyond the purchase of electric cars," emphasised Mejdell.
