Three shot dead at Alabama UPS facility including recently terminated employee

UPS has confirmed that a recently terminated employee was among the three people killed during ashooting incident at a UPS facility outside Birmingham, Alabama, on 23 September.

US media reports claim a man in UPS uniform fatally shot two workers on Tuesday morning at about9.30am local time and then killed himself at a UPS service centre in the Inglenook area ofBirmingham. Although the investigation is continuing, Birmingham Police believe the gunman was adisgruntled recently fired employee, confirming that police had not fired any shots.

UPS said it had been advised by the Jefferson County (Alabama) Medical Examiner’s Office that ithad identified the three people killed during a shooting incident at the UPS facility outsideBirmingham, Alabama on 23 September and confirmed that the families had been notified. They wereidentified as: Doug Hutcheson, a 33-year-old driver supervisor who joined the company in 1999;Brian Callans, a 46-year-old business manager who had worked for UPS for 26 years; and KerryTesney, 45, a recently terminated UPS driver with 21 years of employment.

UPS said the company was continuing to cooperate with the authorities in the investigation. “UPSsends our condolences to the families of these three individuals. They have asked for privacyduring this difficult time.

“The safety and well-being of our employees is our primary focus. We are providing the familiesof the victims, along with the employees who work in this facility, with counselling andsupport.”

At the time of writing, no-one at UPS was able to comment in detail about the measures taken toensure the safety and security of staff and whether these may be revised following this incident.However, a UPS spokesman confirmed to CEP-Research that weapons are strictly prohibited on UPSproperty.

The incident at the UPS facility follows a shooting earlier this year at a FedEx Groundwarehouse facility in Georgia, US, in which a 19-year-old FedEx package handler is reported to haveshot at and wounded six colleagues with a shotgun before fatally shooting himself.

The man reportedly drove to the warehouse at Kennesaw, in suburban Atlanta, where he worked,early in the morning, shot at a security guard and then fired on staff working inside the buildingbefore killing himself.
