GLS is planning to convert all its 60 depots in Germany to eco-friendly ‘LED’ lightingtechnology in the next two years, following a successful pilot project at its depot in
Braunschweig, northern Germany. The company is investing around €1.3 million into the project which is due to be completed bythe end of 2015.
As part of the test run in Braunschweig, GLS was able to save around 78,000 kilowatt hours ofelectricity for lighting per year, which corresponds to savings of around 60%. In addition to thepositive impact on operating costs and CO2 emissions, the employees also gave positive feedbackwith regard to the lighting quality.
In the long run, GLS expects annual savings worth approximately 3.4 gigawatt hours for lightingelectricity at all of its German depots. This would correspond to CO2 savings of 1,870,000 kgs.
The company explained that this initiative represents a further contribution to environmentalprotection which is being implemented as part of its Think Green programme.
