DHL Express faces strike in Canada on Thursday

DHL Express is facing strike action at its centres across Canada after failing to reach a paydeal with union representatives.

The Unifor union has served 72-hour notice of legal strike action on behalf of its 600 membersworking at DHL Express Canada and warned: “A strike will commence in all provinces represented byUnifor across Canada if a fair agreement is not reached by December 5, 2013.”

The strike notice came after DHL Express workers who are members of Unifor voted by 98% infavour of strike action if necessary in a dispute over a new collective agreement. Negotiationshave been ongoing since May 2013 and continued throughout the weekend.

“Unifor is prepared to take on the struggle for courier workers across Canada and our membersare prepared to strike if necessary to achieve a fair contract,” said Bob Orr, assistant to theNational President.

“Our bargaining committees have been working for over six months to achieve a fairagreement.  DHL has stalled on addressing the key issues and their proposals do not reflectthe contributions that our members have made towards the success of DHL,” he claimed.

Unifor members at DHL Express deliver and pick up packages across Canada, includinginternational freight. The union has some 300,000 members in total in a broad range ofindustries.
