Deutsche Post DHL will move several European parcels businesses from the express to the maildivision at the start of next year to target faster growth in e-commerce markets outside Germany.
The parcel businesses in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland and the Czech Republic, which are all profitable, will be switched to the Mail division from January 2014.
CEO Frank Appel said the parcel business would be the number one growth driver for the Maildivision in future. “We intend to further expand this business and not just in Germany. In otherregions we can also profit much more than before from the continuing boom in e-commerce,” hecommented.
The Mail division, already the home of DHL Parcel Germany and DHL Global Mail, which has asignificant international packages business, would thus be able to expand B2C parcels activitieswhile DHL Express could focus on the B2B TDI business, he explained at today’s Q3 results pressconference in Frankfurt.
At present, DHL targets the European B2C markets through a diverse mix of business and alsocooperates with numerous European postal operators for final-mile deliveries.
Appel also commented that the company had decided to dispose of DHL UK’s same-day courierbusiness because it was not “fundamental” for the international express business in the UK.
