DHL opens new logistics centre in Hungary to link forwarding and freight activities

DHL has opened a new logistics centre at Budapest Airport in Hungary for its forwarding andfreight operations, to keep up with rapidly growing volumes and to create synergies between

international and domestic shipments.

The facility will also serve as the new headquarters of DHL Global Forwarding and FreightHungary and is strategically located with direct a connection to the airport and easy access tohighways. DHL Global Forwarding started operations at the new facility in August while DHL Freightwill transfer to the new location in December.

Both units will occupy a total area of 17,000 sqm, of which 8,000 sqm are allocated towarehousing operations. The new facility has 46 docking stations and 48 doors for loading andunloading, plus an additional 3,000 sqm of office space.

Overall, more than 200 employees of DHL Global Forwarding and Freight will work at the facility,handling around 18,000 tonnes of air freight and 16,000 TEUs of ocean freight shipments annually.Additionally, more than 50,000 less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments and more than 33,000 fulltruckload (FTL) shipments will be handled per year at the site.

Frank Appel, Deutsche Post DHL CEO said during the inauguration ceremony of the terminal: “Central and Eastern Europe is an important growth region for our group. The new terminal is asignificant milestone in DHL’s continuous course of expansion and by investing into our presence atBudapest Airport we lay the foundation for further supporting our customers with even moreefficient logistic services.”

Péter Bartha, CEO of DHL Freight Hungary, commented: “According to DHL Freight’s macroeconomicmarket intelligence report, the country’s development will continue to improve by 2.4% in exportand 2.2% in import rates. The improved facility will allow us to easily cope with this growth andthe two business units will drive continuous improvement across the company and remain keenlyfocused on quality operations.”

Thanks to the facility’s structure, DHL said it can handle the consolidation and deconsolidationof containers more efficiently and improve cooperation between the two company divisions. Inaddition to cross-docking processes, the new terminal enables DHL Global Forwarding to bundle orbreak down air freight pallets directly on site.
