Royal Mail this week launched a second Small Parcel format, allowing customers to send items upto 16cm deep and weighing up to 1kg as a Small Parcel rather than a Medium Parcel item.
The company said the new format followed customer feedback and a public consultation and “willensure Royal Mail offers the cheapest price in the market for shoe box size parcels of up to 1kg inweight”.
The new format for items measuring up to 35cm x 25cm x 16cm is intended to complement theexisting wider Small Parcel format measuring up to 45cm x 35cm x 8cm, introduced in April tocoincide with parcel price rises. The change applies to consumers, small non-contract business andfranking customers.
Nick Landon, managing director of Royal Mail Parcels, said the company had responded to feedbackfrom customers and stakeholders and would continue to respond to changing customer needs, marketrequirements, and to remain competitive.
The Small Parcels and Medium Parcels categories introduced in April brought Royal Mail in linewith other major postal operators, for example, in Germany, France and Italy.
Royal Mail said the other changes introduced by Royal Mail last April were intended to simplifyits parcels portfolio, “offering customers a clear product range from standard products to fullyguaranteed services”.
Since April, customers have had the ability, for the first time, to send parcels between 1kg and20kg using Royal Mail’s Second Class service, with the added option to receive a signature ondelivery. Previously, the weight limit for Second Class items was 1kg.
