Hermes Germany expects its parcel volumes to more than double during the upcoming Christmasseason, with up to 1.5 million home deliveries per day and 5,000 additional workers to be hired for

its delivery operations and warehousing logistics.

The company said that while it expected the increase mainly in December, the pre-Christmasupswing in parcel volumes was expected to start in November, due to an increasing number of onlineorders placed prior to the holidays. It was preparing to create additional transport and deliverycapacity, in cooperation with its sub-contractors.

Frank Iden, managing director of the Hermes parcel service in Germany, said: “Compared to theother months, we expect a volume increase of up to 120% in December alone, with a major part of itto be generated during the last two weeks before Christmas. In logistics terms, this is a realchallenge.”

During the last two weeks before Christmas, the company will also strengthen its delivery fleetwith around 2,000 additional vehicles. “This enables us to stay flexible and ensure smooth deliveryof shipments even on days with higher daily volumes than anticipated,” said Iden. ‘If the weatherallows and it doesn’t get too wintry, we expect a very good Christmas business.”
