DPD Austria has modernised its hub in Linz/Hörsching, Upper Austria, investing €100,000 in new, more flexible hardware and software for parcel sorting as well as in technical rebuilding and new
equipment.Around 70,000 parcels are currently being handled at the hub on a daily basis with the numberincreasing up to 120,000 on peak days in December. Every day, 100-120 trucks arrive at the hub withparcels to be sorted and then delivered all over Austria or to neighbouring countries.
“Many parcels stay only 40 minutes in the hub system during the whole process,” Peter Cyriax, the long-serving director of the Hörsching hub explained. DPD has invested in new technology tokeep processes as efficient as possible despite rising parcel volumes. The sorting system has beenextended with two loading gates and two unloading telescopes for unloading road semi-trailers. Toimprove unloading of pallets, DPD additionally invested in a hydraulic adapting ramp.
“But the most important change over the last few weeks was the adjustment of the sorter hardwareand software with a new, more modern system,” Cyriax said. “It is now possible to adjust thesorting logic flexibly, if necessary, and to carry out all changes in the route logic automaticallywith central updates.” This adjustment avoids detours and therefore saves fuel and CO2 emissions inline with DPD’s sustainable policy.
Rainer Schwarz, DPD Austria managing director, added: “The hub in Hörsching is not only the coreof DPD’s parcel operations in Austria but also a central point for parcel distribution toeverywhere in the world.”
As Austria’s leading private parcel operator, DPD Austria employs 1,500 staff and operates 14depots nationwide. The company delivered 38.5 million parcels in 2012.
