FedEx goes back to Libya and opens Ireland freight office

FedEx Express is re-launching its express solutions in Libya through a local partner whilefreight forwarding unit FedEx Trade Networks is continuing its ongoing global expansion by opening

up in Ireland.

FedEx Express has strengthened its presence in Libya through Takween for Airfreight Services,its nominated Service Contractor in the country, as Libya’s rapidly growing economy is expected toattract foreign investors. Takween for Airfreight Services, now a licensed Federal Express GlobalService Provider (GSP), will be offering a range of FedEx services to customers in Libya includingimport, export and customs clearance.

FedEx said it aims to support the country’s growth through enhanced connectivity for companiesand residents across Libya. The new agreement allows the company to use Takween’s well-establishedinfrastructure, systems and resources, to meet customers’ growing shipping needs.

“Libya has great growth potential as the economy stabilises in the post-revolution era. Itsgrowth is not only being spurred by the oil and gas sector, but also by other industries such astrade and construction,” David Ross, senior vice president, Operation, FedEx Express Middle East,Indian Subcontinent and Africa, said. “As a big contributor to international trade, FedEx willsignificantly support Libya and its business community, enhancing flexibility and speed tomarket.”

According to The Economist Intelligence Unit, it is estimated that Libya’s trade surplusrecovered from just $3.9 billion in 2011 to $34.1 billion in 2012. In addition, exports rose from$15 billion to $52.2 billion over the same period due to a rebound in oil output and are expectedto further rise to $81.7 billion in 2017.

FedEx said it has been active in Africa since the early 1990s, through a network of GlobalService Providers. Its network expansion in Libya is an indicator for its commitment in the MiddleEast and North Africa region.

Meanwhile, the new FedEx Trade Networks office in Dublin is its first in Ireland and 24th inEurope, offering customers access to major global markets and the company’s comprehensive portfolioof freight forwarding solutions. Located close to Dublin Airport as well as the city’s port and keymotorways, the new office is an ideal location for experts in international trade to launchoperations.

FedEx highlighted Ireland’s strong export performance over the last two years with access totrade being a key factor in its sustained economic growth.

“With the new operation in Dublin, we can provide global shippers and businesses in the regionwith the local support they need,” Christian Blain, vice president EMEA Operations, FedEx TradeNetworks, said. “Dublin is an important transport hub for the medical device, pharmaceutical,technology, aerospace and industrial sectors and offers multiple import and export options. Thisnew office will provide customers enhanced access to the whole of Europe and increase connectivityworldwide.”
