One-day strike at La Poste generates low turnout

French postal workers went on strike yesterday to demand better working conditions and higherwages but turnout was low.

The one-day stoppage was organised by the CGT union which wants La Poste to stop restructuring,create new jobs, improve working conditions, agree to salary increases and make ‘a return to a realpublic service responding to the needs of everyone and everywhere’. The CGT declared: “La Postemust care for postal workers and customers and not the banks.”

According to the CGT, around 16-20% of La Poste workers took part in the strike but La Postesaid fewer than 6% of its 240,000 staff participated. The union’s representative Christian Mathorelsaid the movement ‘was unequal in regional terms’ with the participation rate reaching 90% in someareas.

Around 250 persons assembled in front of La Poste headquarters in Paris yesterday, according toBenoît Martin from CGT. La Poste workers were joined by railway employees, France Télécomtechnicians and EDF workers.
