Canada Post has improved workplace and delivery safety, stepped up community activities andfurther reduced its environmental impact, according to the company’s 2012 Social Responsibility
report.The postal operator recorded a 12% decrease in injury frequency in 2012 compared to the previousyear which marks its best safety performance in 30 years. The total number of lost-time injuriesalso decreased by 11% last year.
In terms of road safety, the number of collisions increased by 7% in 2012, with the number ofkilometres driven rising by 9%. However, the collision frequency went down from 2% to 1.9% asCanada Post provided nearly 42,000 hours of driver training.
Last year, the Canadian postal operator implemented an employee relations strategy focusing onfront-line leaders with the re-launch of its CORE leadership programme to help them manageworkplace conflict and employee relationships. In addition, new leadership behaviour guidelineswere introduced and face-to-face forums held with more than 3,300 front-line managers, supervisorsand superintendents to help them understand business strategies.
After reviewing its investments in community programmes, the company has been putting a newfocus on the newly created Canada Post Community Foundation and the new approach to its United Waycampaign. The Canada Post Foundation for Mental Health delivered more than $2 million in grants to47 organisations across Canada last year while the Community Foundation for Children raised morethan $1.5 million through in-store retail campaigns, ongoing dime-a-day employee contributions andsales of a special fundraising stamp. Over the last five years, Canada Post foundations have raisedmore than $8.5 million.
As part of its environmental commitment, Canada Post reduced its overall carbon emissions frombuildings and fleet by a total of 13.2% during the last ten years (2002-2012), compared to a targetof 14%.
With Canada Post’s modernisation, which includes increased motorisation of delivery employees,more than 4,500 fuel-efficient Ford Transit Connect vehicles are now deployed in its fleetrepresenting more than half of the entire fleet. Although the vehicle fleet has grown by 37% since2009, fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by more than 4% over the sameperiod. In addition, the postal operator had six LEED-certified building projects at the end of2012.
