DHL Freight is competing with Swedish Post for international parcels sent by Swedish consumers torecipients in Europe.
The company has launched ‘DHL Parcel EU’ as a new service for private persons sendingparcels abroad, offering competitive prices. DHL Freight Sweden claims this is the first service tocompete with the country’s postal operator for international consumer parcels.
Peter Hesslin, CEO of DHL Freight Sweden, said: “DHL Freight is already one of the SwedishPost’s major competitors on the domestic side, and through our entry in the foreign parcels market,we are now a very competitive alternative in this area, too. We are delighted to offer the Swedishpeople a choice for international parcel shipments.”
A company spokeswoman explained that DHL Freight had taken over the domestic services of DHLExpress in Sweden several years ago as part of the latter’s focus on international express and theEU parcel service was thus an extension of the existing domestic offerings.
Under the international parcels service, launched last month, Swedes can register theirparcel on the DHL website www.servicepoint.se, selecting one of five parcel sizes from 1kg to 20kgand with a packaging box included in the price.
Then they can drop off their parcel at one of DHL’s more than 1,300 Service Point agencies, including shops and kiosks, spread throughout the country where they give the retailer forregistered shipment number and pay the appropriate price.
The DHL Parcel EU product is initally available to all EU countries (except for some islanddestinations) and will be gradually extended to all countries worldwide. DHL Freight said it offersequivalent transport times and corresponding traceability as other suppliers of parcel shipments.
Parcels will be transported through the Deutsche Post DHL network and delivered by localpostal operators.
