DPD is equipping more than 12,000 delivery drivers in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Beneluxwith new handheld scanning devices from Honeywell.
Distribution of the new Dolphin 99EX scanners, developed by Honeywell Scanning &Mobility, started in March 2013. The value of the investment was not disclosed.
Designed specifically for use in the logistics industry both indoors and outdoors, the newscanner model features ergonomic handling and is robust enough to survive occasional falls andshocks. Data can be transferred from and to the device through WLAN and 3G, making it a versatiletool for mobile use. Furthermore, its software can be updated and serviced remotely, saving time aswell as costs.
DPD selected the new scanner model through a cooperation with German company PDS (PortableDevices and Solutions), who will also provide a transparent internet portal for device managementand organise repairs and replacements. Through the portal, DPD can ensure that all employees have aworking device at their disposal as depot managers can use it to order replacements for damageddevices within 24 hours, check the repair status of the scanners and monitor their use. Thisadvanced online asset management tool, combined with the Honeywell Device Management RemoteMasterMind and the 24-hour service by PDS, aims to minimise the failure rate of delivery tours dueto damaged handhelds, especially during peak seasons.
Armin Bohnhoff, Group Network Operations Director at DPD Geopost Germany, said: “This is oursecond cooperation with PDS, who already carried out the previous modernisation of our devicesreliably and within schedule. Therefore, we are very happy to continue our cooperation and to beable to benefit from PDS’s experience during the rollout at DPD.”
“With the transition to the new Dolphin 99EX in conjunction with the bespoke PDS onlineservice portal we are geared up for a rising number of transactions in the future,” said PeterStörring, head of Operations & Quality at DPD GeoPost Germany. “The service portal and theHoneywell Device Management Remote Mastermind provide a vital increase in the transparency of ourdevice management and help us maintain efficiency even during peak workload.”
DPD has been working with PDS since 2008. The company, a preferred partner of Honeywell, offers its customers service solutions for Honeywell devices used in the logistics and retailsectors. In the logistics industry, PDS’s customers include Hermes, which has worked with thecompany since 2000 and has recently equipped 18,200 drivers with new Motorola scanners through thepartnership.
