Night Star Express grows more slowly than expected in 2012

Matthias Hohmann

German overnight express specialist Night Star Express increased its shipping volumes by 2% toaround 4.3 million items last year continuing its expansion with further investments in IT and a

new generation of scanners planned for this year.

Matthias Hohmann, managing director of Night Star Express Germany, stressed that the company’sshipping volume growth in 2012 was lower than expected despite good volume development with partlydouble-digit growth in percentage terms at a European level.

“This has different reasons,” he explained. “But mainly, several tenders took longer thanplanned thus delaying the start of cooperating with some new clients. We are quite satisfied withthis development, though, as the integration of two new European partners to our network last yearhas positively impacted our shipping volumes very quickly.”

As part of its expansion, Night Star Express won three European network partners last year, starting in March with Star Express Hellmann B.V. in the Netherlands and Night Star Express S.A. inBelgium. Night Star Express Schweiz AG in Switzerland joined the network several months later.

The partners, who operate under the common name Night Star Express, aim to benefit from NightStar’s brand image and to gain market shares in the European international sector, sinceinternational business has been growing significantly stronger than the domestic business.

With this latest international network expansion and the current volume development, Night StarExpress has an optimistic outlook for 2013 as it celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
