Japan Post and Japan Airlines (JAL) have partnered to launch a new international express servicefor small, temperature-sensitive parcels from Japan to Taiwan and Singapore with a one-year trial
period starting from April 1, 2013 until March 31, 2014.Called ‘Cool EMS’, the rapid delivery service provides the ideal solution for transportingJapanese food from Japan at appropriate temperatures ensuring freshness and safety, both companiessaid.
Japan is reputed for the good quality and freshness of its food with the number of visitors inthe country increasing. The new service responds to the growing demand in other parts of Asia forthe country’s food, fruits and other agricultural products, Japanese raw fish (sashimi) and otherseafood as well as its regional specialties.
With the choice of fresh Japanese food outside Japan being rather limited at local supermarkets, direct delivery of such temperature-sensitive perishables for personal consumption has not beenavailable until now. Therefore, Cool EMS meets both the needs of non-Japanese overseas and Japanesenatives abroad.
Under the cooperation, Japan Post will provide its international speed post service withovernight delivery to major Asian cities for parcels to arrive the following day. In turn, JapanAirlines brings along its expertise in the area of temperature-controlled freight with advancedprocedures and equipment. These include various types of temperature-controlled containers tohandle high value, temperature-sensitive cargo like pharmaceuticals.
Cool EMS can be used for parcels with a maximum weight of 15kg and the dimensions of 34cm inlength, 26cm in width and 23cm in height. The parcels will be transported in special coldcontainers at temperatures kept between 2-10 °C within 72- 80 hours.
Looking ahead, Japan Post and JAL plan to further extend Cool EMS providing delivery oftemperature-sensitive goods including frozen products to more Asian regions such as Hong Kong,Shanghai and South Korea. This way, the companies aim to support small and medium-sized companiesin Japan offering them business opportunities overseas.
