FedEx has been accused in a lawsuit of ‘systematically overcharging’ US-based business customersby imposing an unnecessary surcharge but rejects the claims.

US media reported yesterday on a year-old case in which two law firms are taking action againstthe company at a Memphis court claiming that they and other business customers were overcharged fordeliveries. The lawsuit alleges that FedEx has “known for years that it is unlawfully chargingresidential delivery surcharges for deliveries to non-residential addresses.”

The company imposed the surcharge, which is currently $3 per package, on at least 500,000occasions, according to the Financial Times.

On Monday the judge in the case released internal company e-mails from a FedEx sales executivein August 2011 warning that the company had been “systematically overcharging” business customersfor several years by imposing the residential delivery surcharge, and claiming the company hadfailed to take action to stop the problem.

In response, a FedEx spokeswoman told CEP-Research: “FedEx built its reputation on award-winningcustomer service. We highly value our relationships with our customers and these relationships areat the core of all we do. These 11 documents do not tell the entire story of this case. We willcontinue to defend these allegations in a court of law and not the media.”
