DHL Express invests $20m on expanded Miami air hub

DHL Express USA has opened its expanded air hub at Miami International Airport to cope with risingdemand for shipping to and from Latin America and also signed a new Global Buyer Initiative to

support increasing US exports.

The new 140,000 sq ft (13,000 sqm) facility in Miami with an investment of over $20 millionwill function as a hub for processing DHL shipments from all over the world to Latin America andthe Caribbean and vice versa. Larger space and state-of-the-art technology are expected tosignificantly improve shipment handling times.

The modernised site features new conveyor systems, additional space for DHL operations and USCustoms processing, extra handling and storage space for dry and perishable goods along with otherimprovements. These include upgraded shipment scanning technology to enable quicker handling andbetter shipment visibility.

“The expansion of our operations at Miami International Airport is part of our long-terminvestment to support market growth in import and export volumes along the US-Latin America tradelane,” Ian Clough, CEO of DHL Express USA, said. “This investment, which surpasses $20 million,will bring immediate benefits for our customers, who will experience increased speed, reliability,capacity and connectivity for their international shipments.”

Over the last decade, total US merchandise trade with Latin America, which includes exportsand imports, grew by 82 per cent.

As part of the new Global Buyer Initiative (GBI), DHL will bring its customers in foreigncountries together with US small- and medium-sized business suppliers. The GBI is part of variouspartnership programmes of the U.S. Government’s National Export Initiative. It aims to create moreUS jobs by increasing the number of companies exporting and the markets for US companies thatcurrently export their products.

DHL is launching its GBI initially in Mexico, Colombia, Panama and Canada. The new agreementcomplements the existing New Market Exporter Initiative partnership between DHL and the USDepartment of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA).
