DHL Express Australia has upgraded its facilities in Port Melbourne, a suburb of Melbourne, withan AUD 4.5 million (€3.64 million) investment in capacity and warehouse space to keep up with the
growing volumes in the region.The new facility, with an area of 605 sqm and an additional 4,645 sqm of warehouse space,ensures that all pick-up and delivery services as well as shipment processing for export andre-weight can be managed at the site. Some 90 staff work at the facility.
In addition, DHL Express has also further enhanced its Melbourne Gateway located at MelbourneAirport with the introduction of a superior material handling system and high speed re-weightechnology. These logistical improvements will make DHL operations more efficient, especially inthe run-up to the busy Christmas season.
Gary Edstein, Senior Vice President Oceania, DHL Express said: “With significant volume growthover the last two years and the continued surge in overseas online shopping, it has been necessaryto develop this new facility which will accommodate up to 50 DHL delivery vans. Along with thetwice-weekly dedicated inbound 747 freighters from the USA, we are well-positioned for futuregrowth in the international express market.”
According to DHL’s 2012 Export Barometer, exporters in the Victoria region turned out to be themost confident with 52% predicting an increase in export orders for 2013. Conducted by ACAResearch, 785 Australian exporters were surveyed for the research between May and July 2012.
“Melbourne is home to some key industries, such as engineering, manufacturing and apparel, withlarge DHL global customers including Pacific Brands, Quiksilver, Sealite, Nissan and Black MagicDesign,” Edstein explained. “These industries continue to propel logistics and our new facilitiesform part of our strategic focus in Melbourne for the next five to ten years.”
