GLS has started operating a new depot near Trier in Rhineland-Palatinate, central Germany, toshorten routes into the growing economic region and to cope with continuously rising volumes.
The new facility in Sehlem takes over the delivery tours of the depots in Koblenz andSaarbrücken that previously served the region which includes Germany’s oldest city of Trier and theEifel region with important industrial areas. The border region including Luxemburg is also withinthe delivery area of the new depot.
Klaus Conrad, Managing Director GLS Germany, explained: “Through the new site, we haveshortened the delivery times of transport companies and delivery drivers by up to one hour. Sehlemis centrally located in the delivery area that has previously been approached from two directions.It is planned to deploy where possible the transport providers that are based in the region.
“For shippers, it creates the possibility to set later pick-up appointments than previouslyso that they can serve their customers even faster,” Conrad added. Sehlem is strategicallyconnected to long-distance transportation networks, especially to the GLS hub in Neuenstein,Hessen, through its convenient location directly at the A1 highway.
In Sehlem, GLS has moved into an existing hub which was previously completely renovated in aneco-friendly way with a photovoltaic system producing the required electricity in the depot. Aportable heater ensures convenient working temperature in the hall during the winter months. “Withthe new depot, we can support this growth region reliably with high-quality parcel logistics,”Conrad concluded.
