DPD Germany has further expanded the capacity of its parcel distribution centre in the town ofMelle, close to Osnabrück in north-western Germany, with an additional investment of €6 million,
adding to the €20 million initially invested.The upgraded facility is one of the main hubs in the DPD network in Germany. Thanks to theinstallation of a fourth sorting line, up to 20,000 parcels per hour can now be sortedautomatically – 5,000 more than at the original facility that started operating in December 2007.During the entire day, the hub can handle up to 75,000 inbound and 110,000 outbound parcels.
The hub’s overall area has been expanded by 24,000 sqm to 69,000 sqm and 25 new loading andunloading gates have been added, making 152 in total. A further 65 parking spaces for swap bodieshave also been added, taking the total to 316. About 600 people, including delivery staff, are nowemployed at the site, with 335 delivery tours effected daily and 101 transport links.
As a result of this capacity increase, DPD said more international destinations can be serveddirectly from the depot in Melle in the future. At present there are already 26 direct cross-borderlinks, including Barcelona, Birmingham, Paris, Lyon, Verona, Malmö, Turku and Poznan.
The hub in Melle has the highest number of transport connections to DPD’s intercity transportnetwork within the whole European DPD operation, giving quick parcel delivery to all DPD locationswithin Germany, the company said. Direct deliveries to Benelux, France, UK, Denmark, Finland,Sweden, Austria and Switzerland are also operated on a daily basis. Melle is strategically locatedon the Amsterdam-Hanover motorway, north of the Rhine-Ruhr industrial region.
