FedEx Express has announced the upcoming installation of its largest rooftop solar-electricsystem at its distribution hub at Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey, that could
provide over 15% of the hub’s energy needs.Currently, the company operates eight solar facilities around the world.
“This solar installation at our Newark FedEx Express hub advances our commitment to connect theworld in responsible and resourceful ways,” Mitch Jackson, vice president Environmental Affairs andSustainability at FedEx Corp., said. “Deploying solar technologies such as these at our facilitieshelps us reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our operations while providing more sustainableoptions for our customers.”
After several years of planning with The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runsthe airport, the project will create over 120 jobs in more than eight different industries. Workerswill install the 8,684 solar modules that will cover 14,164 sqm across three buildings on the roofof the FedEx Express hub at Newark airport.
When completed, the system will generate approximately 2.4 million kilowatt hours (kWh) withannual reduction of approximately 1,807 metric tons of C02 emissions. This would equal either 354passenger cars not driven for one year or 225 households’ electricity use for one year, accordingto the Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
