GLS France has expanded its depot at Roissy-en-France, close to Paris, into a regional hub with anoverall investment of €1.5 million increasing the capacity of the site and strengthening its
presence in the metropolitan area of the capital. The enlarged facility, located in the northeastern suburbs of Paris, increases the maximumhandling capacity by nearly 30 per cent with the previous sorting and conveyor technology beingcompletely replaced. Since early September, GLS has been handling up to 37,000 parcels daily here.
“With the investment, Roissy has been upgraded from a depot to a regional hub,” EmericBastid, Managing Director GLS France, said. “We were able to complete the extensive works in Roissyjust in time for the high-volume autumn business.”
Some 50 people work at the facility, which has over 30 loading gates for vehicles. As part ofthe construction work that took several months, the Uni-Video alarm and video surveillance systemhas been installed at the expanded site to provide full protection for the parcel shipments.
In its new role as a regional hub, the Roissy site relieves the pressure on the keyÎle-de-France region around Paris. GLS handles most of its parcels in the region at its nationalcentral hub in Fleury-Mérogis, located in the southern suburbs of Paris.
Thanks to the additional capacity in the north of the capital, the company can distribute themain flow of goods more efficiently, especially in the northern half of France. The site in Roissynow takes over the national and international GLS shipments from Lille, Metz and the neighbouringdepot of Gennevilliers. The packages are then distributed to 17 depots in the geographical triangleof Nantes – Lille – Metz.
Due to its geographical location, the hub serves as an interface for international parcelshipping with Paris Charles de Gaulle airport located only 5 km away. GLS works here closely withnetwork partners and ships parcels all over the world. Via Roissy, the parcel operator offers itscustomers and partners a quick and reliable connection to the GLS global network.
