Deutsche Post has got approval from the German Network Agency for its mail price hike of 2.8% onaverage for the coming year which represents the first increase in 15 years.
With the approval, the price for a standard domestic letter (up to 20 grams) will increase fromthe current €0.55 to €0.58 from January 1, 2013 onwards. After the last price increase in 1997 anda rate decrease in 2003, it is the first time Deutsche Post considers it necessary to adjust theprices due to the general cost development.
“This adjustment is necessary to ensure the high quality of the nationwide postal service inGermany as well as jobs with appropriate social conditions in future,” Deutsche Post said in astatement.
In addition, the price for a domestic Maxi letter (up to 1,000 grams) will rise from €2.20 to€2.40. The rates for compact, large letters and postcards will remain the same. The request isbased on the legally stipulated procedure for setting the prices of selected mail products.
As for international correspondence, the price for a compact letter up to 50 grams is going upfrom €1.45 to €1.50. In contrast, the price for the international standard letter up to 20 gramsremains stable along with the rates for large and Maxi letter and postcards sent abroad. The priceper item for letters sent abroad at the so-called “kilo tariff” rises from €0.51 to €0.54. Inaddition, the prices for the additional, less-demanded services including cash-on-delivery andexpress letter will also increase for international correspondence.
