GLS opens new depot in southern Germany for more efficient operations

GLS Germany opens new depot in Cham

GLS has opened a new depot near Regensburg in southern Germany to take pressure off its locationin Straubing, close to Munich, thus shortening delivery routes.

Located in Cham, the new depot now serves recipients in the northern Bavarian Forest and theUpper Palatinate regions as well as in the border region between Bavaria and the Czech Republic.Until now, these recipients have been getting their parcels from the GLS depot in Straubing locatedaround 45 km away, further in the south. The new facility takes over about 17 delivery tours.

“In recent years, the shipping volumes in Straubing have been continuously increasing,” KlausConrad, Managing Director GLS Germany, said. “We are very pleased about this development. At thesame time, however, the amount of work for our drivers has increased.”

GLS stressed that the new depot reduces the workload for its sub-contractors and their drivers. The driving time to delivery locations is reduced by around 35 minutes on average as the new siteis situated centrally in the outsourced delivery area. Around two-thirds of the drivers alreadyhave a shorter way to work since they live in the surrounding area.

In addition, parcel sorting operations now take considerably less time. Currently, the depot hasa capacity to sort up to 6,000 parcels but the area can be expanded by 30%, if necessary. The 1,750sqm facility employs 5 staff and 18 drivers. It features a gate for long-distance traffic with twointerchangeable parking spaces and two main entrances for the sprinter vans.

The site is conveniently located close to the highways B 20 and B 85 providing quick access tothe hub in Neuenstein and the regional distribution centre in Feuchtwangen. The depot in Cham isalso connected to Straubing with regular direct connections to Austria.

The building is heat insulated and fully equipped with a photovoltaic system on the roof thatdirects the generated electricity directly into the depot. “When choosing the hall, issues such asenergy efficiency and sustainability were a priority for us,” Conrad added.
