DPD Slovenia cycles around Ljubljana’s city centre with eco-friendly bike deliveries

DPD

DPD Slovenia has started parcel delivery by bike in the centre of Ljubljana, the country’s capital,to raise environmental awareness and to reduce its carbon footprint as part of the environmental

programme “Total Zero”, the company’s comprehensive CO2-neutral shipping commitment.

DPD claimed it is the first logistics company in Slovenia to introduce this delivery method.Powered by electricity, the bicycle was manufactured by the Sector for Cycling and will effectdeliveries in the city centre of Ljubljana with relatively short distances where recipientsgenerally receive only one parcel.

The idea for bicycle deployment came about as deliveries in the central part of Ljubljana areonly possible early in the morning, between 6 a.m. and 9:30 a.m, which has caused problems for DPDSlovenia where delivery times are not flexible, the company explained.

With the introduction of bikes for delivery, the parcels brought into the centre by van willbe handed over to cyclists, who will then distribute them around the centre.

Andrej Cergolj, the Executive Director of DPD Slovenia, said: “Business optimisation is ourprimary concern as well as looking for ways to send parcels without producing harmful emissions, and so we are very proud that we are the first in Slovenia to introduce this innovation. We aim tohave as many bicycles as possible of this type in the future, in other Slovenian towns as well.”
