PostNL scoops discount coupons via smartphone app with Dutch acquisition

PostNL has acquired a minority stake in Scoopy, a Dutch company providing discount coupons forconsumers via a free mobile app in the Netherlands, via its subsidiary Netwerk VSP.

The free Scoupy app for smartphones gives consumers access to discounts in shops, bars, hotels,restaurants and leisure activities in their proximity. Mobile couponing enables them, based ontheir current location, to search for and view thousands of unique and topical discount couponsproviding a kind of ‘discount coupon booklet’ that is always up to date. In order to receive adiscount, the digital discount coupon has to be activated and shown locally.

“Scoupy is the leader in the rapidly growing mobile couponing market in the Netherlands,” PostNLsaid in a statement.

“By working together with Scoupy, we can now offer our customers new options, in addition to ourtried and trusted leaflets, for getting consumers to cross the threshold. Scoupy is an inspiringand enterprising company, and we are pleased that they have chosen us as their strategic partner sothey can continue to grow,” Yme Pasma, Managing Director of Netwerk VSP, said. He added that thecollaboration with Scoupy was an important element in Netwerk VSP’s strategy of extending itsdoor-to-door consumer advertising base to include the internet and mobile telephony.

“Scoupy’s Managing Director Valentijn Bras added: “The cooperation with Netwerk VSP is asignificant step for Scoupy in order to link up with more national retail chains and to build onour success with users and vendors.”

Netwerk VSP delivers more than 7 billion door-to-door leaflets in the Netherlands every year. Asa wholly-owned subsidiary of PostNL, it has over 550 permanent employees with some 22,000 leafletdeliverers.

The new cooperation comes at a time when the number of smartphones in the Netherlands has grownto 9 million with further strong growth expected in the next five years. The UK and the USA havebeen ahead of the Netherlands in growth terms with mobile couponing developing strongly in thesemarkets and counting millions of active users each day.
