Australia Post has opened its first “postal superstore” in Tasmania with an investment ofAUS$500,000 as part of the ongoing rollout of 30 such retail centres across the country.
The new superstore, which is the expanded and modernised main post office in the island’scapital, Launceston, offers customers the convenience of having an unprecedented range of postal,financial, identity and online services all under the one roof. The superstore features fivecounters tailored to different customer needs, a self-service terminal and postal vending machinefor those in a hurry as well as personal service for more specialised transactions such asfinancial and identity services.
To cater for the record numbers of Tasmanians shopping online, the Launceston superstore hasdedicated 24/7 parcel lockers for post office box holders as well as a digital zone, so customerscan shop online via iMacs and iPads.
In addition, travel insurance and merchandise are available in-store. From October, theLaunceston Travel and Information Centre will also relocate within the heritage building to providetravel information to visitors in the region.
Australia Post Regional Manager for Retail Services in Victoria and Tasmania, Roger Revere,stressed that the design of the superstore took into account the changes in customers’ needs whilealso maintaining the integrity of the iconic building. “The transformation of the post officebuilding in Launceston is an important milestone for the Launceston community and we’re excited tobring a range of new products and services to residents and local businesses,” he said.
The iconic Brisbane GPO opened as the nation’s first superstore last November followed by othernew facilities in Melbourne, Cairns, New South Wales, Adelaide and Perth.
The superstores are modernised post offices or new facilities that are designed to respond tothe boom in online shopping with a broader range of products and services. They have a 24/7 zonewith vending machines, parcel lockers and self-service terminals, as well as a Harvey World Travelstore and an American Express currency exchange outlet. The 24/7 zone gives customersaround-the-clock access to post and collect parcels, pay for postage, purchase stamps and packagingproducts and pay bills.
