Russian Post to speed up delivery of inbound mail from Germany

Russian Post

Russian Post plans to accelerate the delivery of inbound postal shipments from Germany to Russiaby offering Deutsche Post to pre-sort mail according to four Russian territorial zones.

The issue of improving the postal exchange between the two countries is especially important asGermany is among the top five mail export countries to Russia, sending 482,000 mail items lastyear. This represents 28% of the total incoming mail from abroad.

In contrast, only 24,000 shipments were sent from Russia to Germany in 2011, accounting for just10% of the overall volumes. The volumes of mail shipments in both directions have increasedcompared to previous periods.

The first territorial zone comprises the North-Western part of Russia, the second is the Volgaand Ural regions, the third is Siberia and Far East and the fourth is the central part of Russia.Mail sent to one of these four zones will arrive directly at the local International Post Office(MMPO) located in closest proximity to the respective recipient. Afterwards, the mail shipmentswill be distributed to regions and cities of the respective zone for further delivery tocustomers.

Russian Post stressed that this approach will optimise delivery times though eliminatingunnecessary processing steps. Russian Post predicts a delivery time reduction of 2-5 days forshipments from Germany which will also depend on the regions and the existing transportationroutes.

Moreover, the pre-sorting will allow Russian Post to unburden the central International PostOffice in the Moscow region which currently processes 70-80% of the shipments.

Russian Post hopes that its proposal for pre-sorting will be supported by Deutsche Post socustomers will be able to profit from the improved delivery quality soon.

In view of the urgency of the issue for efficient postal exchange with other countries, RussianPost said it aims to submit similar proposals to postal operators of the UK, USA and China.
