FedEx Express raises its aircraft emission goal by 50%

FedEx Express has increased its aircraft emissions goal by 50% from the initial targetedreduction of 20% to a new target of 30% to be achieved by 2020 after it already nearly met the

first goal.

According to its fourth Global Citizenship Report, FedEx already reduced its aircraft emissionsby 13.8% and improved its fuel efficiency by 16.6% coming close to its goal of 20% compared to2005. Due to this positive result, the company has revised its goal and reaffirmed its commitmentto use at least 30% of its jet fuel from alternative fuels by 2030.

By 2015, the company plans to replace all of its less-efficient B727 freighters with morefuel-efficient 757 aircrafts with greater payload. It also continues to add more B777F freightersusing 18% less fuel than the MD-11. In 2013, FedEx wants to introduce the new Boeing 767 aircraftto its fleet to meet the newly-revised emission reduction target.

This year’s GlobalCitizenship Report showcases our tireless efforts to maximise our efficiency while advancing ourcommitment to connect the world in responsible and resourceful ways.”

FedEx stressed that this performance is partly the result of its environmental initiativesEarthSmart Innovations and EarthSmart @ Work, and in particular its Fuel Sense initiative with its “ Reduce, Replace, Revolutionise” approach to network management.

In terms of road transportation, the company is expanding its fleet of all-electric commercialvehicles in cities around the globe which operate alongside fuel-efficient Sprinter vans, hybridvehicles and other delivery solutions such as electric-powered tricycles in Paris. During itsfiscal year 2012, it increased its fleet of advanced alternative-vehicles by 18% to a total of 364hybrid-electric vehicles and 118 electric vehicles travelling 12.1 million miles and conserving345,000 gallons of fuel in total.

In addition, its Carbon-Neutral Envelope Shipping programme is helping consumers improve thecarbon footprint with no additional costs for them. FedEx calculated that the annual carbonemissions offset by this programme equal to planting 2,179,487 tree seedlings and letting them growfor 10 years.

The company’s recycling efforts helped collect 47.9 million pounds of recyclable waste in 2011which is 6 million pounds more compared to the previous year. Also in 2011, FedEx aircraft andtrucks helped transport more than 5.2 million pounds of disaster relief supplies and equipment fororganisations including the American Red Cross and Direct Relief International throughout the year,according to its report.

In terms of employee commitments, 3,400 team members around the world donated 64,000 hours in 72cities worldwide volunteering with local, national and international organisations in 2011.
