DHL expands in southern China with Shenzhen regional freight hub deal

DHL today stepped up its expansion in southern China with a deal to create a regional freight hubat Shenzhen just days after opening its North Asia express hub at Shanghai and a new supply chain

hub in Hong Kong.

DHL Global Forwarding has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for strategiccollaboration with the Authority of Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry CooperationZone. The zone, close to Shenzhen international airport, will be developed as a new low-taxcommercial, financial and logistics area that is designed to become a “pioneering zone” for themainland and to increase investment by Hong Kong-based firms in the region.

Under the terms of the MOU, DHL will set up an Integrated Logistics Centre in Qianhai andtake advantage of the bonded zone’s preferential business policies, world-class logistic facilitiesand strategic location. DHL said it will gradually set up a regional shipping hub and distributioncentre in the zone and would consider establishing a regional business headquarters there.

By operating a logistics hub at Qianhai Bay, DHL Global Forwarding would be able toconsolidate outbound freight shipments from manufacturers in the Pearl River Delta region, basedaround Guangzhou and Shenzhen, and then ship them by air or sea from Hong Kong. No informationabout the logistics centre’s planned size or capacity was disclosed.
