UPS Freight to hike 2012 rates 5.9% from July 16

UPS Freight has announced a general rate increase averaging 5.9% for non-contractual shipmentsin the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The rate adjustment takes effect on July 16, 2012, and applies to minimum charge, LTL rates andaccessorial charges, the fourth-largest LTL carrier in the USA said.

The impact may vary based on specific lanes or shipment characteristics, such as weight orclass, it noted. Customers will be able to view and download the new rates at www.ltl.upsfreight.com.

Last month, FedEx Freight has also announced an increase in its shipping rates which is slightlyhigher than that of UPS Freight with 6.9% coming into effect on July 9, 2012, and applies tointerstate and intrastate traffic in the USA and Canada. Rates for shipments between the US andMexico will go up 6.9% for the US leg of the transportation. Various additional adjustments willinclude absolute minimum and accessorial charges.

In April this year, UPS launched a new ground freight service between the USA and Mexico to helpcompanies investing in cross-border trade better cope with supply chain challenges related toheavy-weight freight. Called UPS CrossBorder Connect, the premium service combines the company’stransportation and customs brokerage expertise to boost speed to market, increase cost efficiencyand reduce supply chain risks. It is a contractual service leveraging the trucking network thatsupports UPS’s North American Air Freight service and has been connected with Mexican carriers ateight important points along the US-Mexico border.
