FedEx Ground to build $56m distribution centre in New York

FedEx Ground has started the construction of a new $56 million distribution centre in LongIsland City (LIC), the westernmost neighborhood of the New York City borough of Queens.

The new 13,000 sqm automated distribution facility at Borden Avenue will replace the company’ssmaller and older facility in Maspeth, a small community in Queens, and is due to open in August2013.

The new facility, expected to create 80 new jobs, means FedEx Ground will in future beconveniently located close to the Long Island Expressway and the Midtown Tunnel, US mediareported.

“We chose this Long Island City site because it offers easy access to local highways, is closeto customers and has a large population from which to recruit future employees,” Sean O’Connor,FedEx Ground Vice President for Eastern Region, said. The company will hire 80 new employees while120 workers will be moving from the current FedEx facility.

Dan Miner, senior vice president at Long Island City Partnership, the marketing arm of the LongIsland City Business Improvement District and the Long Island City Business DevelopmentCorporation, said he was confident that FedEx move would lead to more companies moving to LIC.

Long Island City Partnership’s mission is to further economic development of LIC’s industrial,commercial, cultural, and residential sectors. The goal is to attract new businesses to LIC, retainthose already there, welcome new residents and visitors, and promote a vibrant and authenticmixed-use community.
