Canada Post is planning price increases for its letters, cards and postcards with effect fromJanuary 14, 2013, as part of its five-year pricing strategy announced in 2009.

From next year onwards, the price for domestic basic letters weighing up to 30 grams willincrease 2 cents, from $0.61 to $0.63. Domestic letters weighing between 30 and 50 grams will cost$0.05 more than now with the price increasing to $1.10. For all other domestic letter weightcategories, the price increases will range between $0.04 and $0.10 with the heavier categoriesincurring the larger increases.

For letters, cards and postcards up to 30 grams destined for the USA, the price will increase by$0.05 to $1.10. The prices for these items sent to other international destinations will also riseby $0.05 to $1.85. Domestic registered mail will become $0.25 more expensive with a new price of$8.50.

The company explained: “The price increases will help ensure that Canada Post’s costs inmaintaining postal service to more than 15 million addresses across Canada will continue to beborne by people and businesses that use the postal service, rather than through taxpayersupport.”

The Canadian postal operator further explained that the increases would have a minimal impact onCanadian households with an estimated 15 cents per year for domestic letter mail. The impact for asmall or medium-sized business is estimated at nearly $5 per year for domestic letter mail.

However, the postal operator is also offering Canadians and small businesses the chance to savemoney by purchasing the PERMANENT stamp before January 14. PERMANENT stamps are always valued atthe current basic Lettermail rate.
