DPD expands Irish distribution centre

Irish minister opens larger Athlone depot

DPD has expanded a regional fulfilment and distribution facility in Ireland, creating 50 new jobs.


The company, which describes itself as Ireland’s leading express parcel carrier, said itexpected to create over 50 new positions at the enlarged depot in Athlone, central Ireland, overthe next 18 months. The 6,150 sqm facility was opened in 2006 following a €18 million investment,employing 200 people.

The enlarged fulfilment centre was officially opened by the country’s Minister for Jobs,Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton, on April 19.

DPD’s customer base has become increasingly cost conscious– right across every sector. We’ve had to adapt quickly to that change. Through strong investmentin research and development and technical innovation, we’ve improved efficiencies for DPD and forour customers. We’re delivering their products faster, safer, and more cost effectively,” saidBrendan O’Neill, CEO of DPD Ireland.

Founded in 1986, with just 10 depots, DPD has grown to become Ireland’s leading expressparcels provider with a network of 38 depots throughout Ireland, currently employing over 600people. DPD, which currently contributes over €40 million to the Irish economy, has 350vehicles on the road, carrying over 8 million parcels a year.

In its latest service enhancement, the company has introduced the Predict service forconsumers, giving them a three-hour time window in which to expect delivery of their parcel.

“DPD’s growth directly reflects growth in e-commerce and internet shopping. Our in-housedevelopment team produces innovative solutions that improve the private consumer experience. We’vemade the parcel delivery process simpler, quicker and easier,” O’Neill said.

“We’re already dominating business to business parcel delivery. Now with our large network ofdepots and vehicles and flexible delivery solutions, DPD is fast becoming the preferred carrier ofthe business to private consumer market. 52 weeks a year we routinely deliver to over 1.75 millionIrish households and 85 per cent of businesses. As a fulfilment and delivery provider, we have tobe constantly innovating and developing solutions to suit a constantly changing marketplace – that’s one of the things that DPD does best,” he added.
