TNT Express launches first electric delivery vehicles in Hong Kong

TNT Express has launched two electric, zero-emission delivery vehicles with a weight of 3.5tonnes in Hong Kong as the first company to deploy electric vehicles in the country.

“As a good corporate citizen, TNT is working together with customers, suppliers and subcontractsto continuously improve our overall CO2 efficiency to fight against climate change,” Peter Langley,Managing Director of TNT International Express Greater China, explained. “We are proud to play aleading role in spearheading electric vehicles in Hong Kong.”

TNT’s current project is being supported by the Pilot Green Transport Fund under the Hong KongSAR Government’s Environmental Protection Department (EPD). “We applaud EPD for providing supportto TNT to trial electric vehicles in the territory,” Edward Lau, Managing Director of TNT ExpressHong Kong, added.

In Hong Kong, the transport sector (including road and marine transport) is the second largestair pollution source, accounting for about 37% of the local respirable suspended particulates andnitrogen oxides and 6% of sulphur dioxide. In terms of greenhouse gases, the share of the transportsector is about 18% of local emissions, according to EPD.

To help improve roadside air quality and reduce carbon emissions, the Hong Kong Government hasset up a $300 million Pilot Green Transport Fund to support the testing of green and innovativetechnologies that can be used for the public transport sector and goods vehicles.

A spokesperson for the EPD said. “The transport sector can make a significant difference byadopting new technology to reduce carbon emissions and roadside air pollution. We hope that TNT’sinnovative initiative will inspire other companies to follow suit to do their part to improve HongKong’s air quality.”
